Worth the read? – Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Official Movie Pre-Quill

Before we got the movie, we got a prequel!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been released in theatres and enjoyed great success so far. Fans applauded the the speedy sequel for getting deeper into the franchise’s storied lore and elements.

But before all of that, we got a prequel!

Overview

Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Official Pre-Quill did a lot to catch up with what was needed to be known after seeing the first Sonic movie. In fact, all five stories in the Pre-Quill helped familiarize the main characters, especially Movie Sonic. You’ll see that he’s a different entity from any other Sonic. It’s an interesting take, given that it made him seem more of a easily bored and energetic child.

We see our first glimpses of major elements from the first movie in this comic as well, like Sonic being addicted to being a superhero, just to name a few.

The Pre-Quill was also our first time meeting the movie versions of Knuckles the Echidna and Miles “Tails” Prower, and not only were they both faithful to their gaming counterparts, they helped establish more context about their deals with Sonic in the theatrical film.

Always bet on red & Two for building up what will be eventually, if not already, the Sonic Cinematic Universe, by highlighting zones from the games, with one zone even mentioned by name. The zones explored in the movie universe, I believe, were a treat, and I hope more will be revisited. Though, so far, only zones that originated from the classic games were shown, and it would be great to see some from the modern games one day.

Each story did a good job at being a prelude to what will come next in the Sonic movie series. Unfortunately, it appears there wasn’t a lot of time for the other stories beyond Sonic. The time spent with the other characters felt short-lived, but at the same time, it may be understandable, given that they will play a big role in the movie sequel.

Final thoughts

This comic is worth reading, even if you have already seen Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It provides a bit more backstory on characters, and they’re fun to read. Every artist did a great job on this book and did a good job bringing the movie versions of Sonic characters into 2D.

Just to throw the idea out there; it would be amazing to have a mini-series or side series based on the Sonic movies (i.e Archie’s Sonic X).
