SEGA’s parent company, SEGASammy, recently released a new integrated report, and numbers related to the quantity of Sonic the Hedgehog units sold and downloaded have been updated.
As of fiscal year 2020, also known as calendar year 2019, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has sold over 1.14 billion cumulative units. It is an increase of more than 200 million from the last fiscal year – 920 million. These numbers contain sales from packaged and digital games, downloads, and revenue incurred from the rest of the rollout, such as toys and arcades.
As the most multifaceted franchise in SEGASammy’s portfolio, the increased number of sales and downloads illustrate the strength of the Sonic franchise, who continued to help the company generate a profit quarter after quarter, despite economic pressure placed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The series continued to enjoy growth after a successful motion picture in cinemas, and a highly anticipated 30th anniversary by fans.
