Sonic Studio creative officer Takashi Iizuka talked more about the next main Sonic title in a interview.

The game, which some leaks have pointed out that it could be named Sonic Rangers, has been met with curiosity by fans, due to it seeming to be something brand new for the Sonic series.

Iizuka, speaking to Sonic Stadium, said that the development studio spent a long time aiming to build “something new and challenging” for the Sonic series, hoping that the new game will impact the following ones for a number years. It matched what he expressed before, saying that the 2022 title will probably define the path Sonic Team plans to take the franchise for the next decade.

When asked if the upcoming 2022 Sonic title will be an anniversary title in the same way that Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations were, Iizuka said that “it wasn’t really an anniversary title”.

The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title.

The creative officer expressed that Sonic Adventure was a more fitting example of what he wants to accomplish with the upcoming Sonic game, similar in the way that the 1998 title impacted the Sonic series and all of its following titles.

Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.

Iizuka also said that the reason that the teaser for the 2022 game was shown at the end of Sonic Central to reassure fans that a new main Sonic game is on the way. He also added that the development team is trying something the Sonic series has never done before.

Since this title is still mid-development there is nothing I can speak to, but I did want to say that the development team has been spending their time trying to do something new and challenging.

Iizuka finalized and said that he hopes that fans will support Sonic Team’s new endeavors.

Through a lot of trial and error the team is looking to present to everyone a new Sonic game, and I hope your warm support of their work can motivate them to really deliver against that challenge.
