Sonic movie sequel, upcoming Sonic game expected to be previewed at The Game Awards

Sonic will be showing up at The Game Awards, both in movie form, and game form.

After days of teases and months of waiting, it was assured that the next Sonic the Hedgehog game and the upcoming movie sequel will be previewed at this year’s The Game Awards.

New movie sequel poster

In a tweet published early Wednesday, Paramount confirmed that the world premiere of the sequel’s first trailer will debut during the awards ceremony. Fans also received a brand new poster that depicted the hedgehog on the Tornado piloted by Miles “Tails” Prower, a reference to the 1992 16-bit title Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

There were no signs of Knuckles in the poster, though Tails’ Channel understood that the echidna is expected to appear in the trailer, which was reported by the Alberta Film Classification office to be over two minutes in length.

The “next game”

In addition to the sequel, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley confirmed that fans will be able to see Sonic’s “next game” during the ceremony. It can be interpreted as a hint towards the yet-to-be-announced mainline title that was unveiled at the end of the Sonic 30th anniversary broadcast and scheduled for a 2022 release. It had led many fans to speculate that new details on the rumoured Sonic Frontiers could finally arrive.

Meanwhile, actors Jim Carrey (acted Robotnik) and Ben Schwartz (voice acted Sonic) were both announced to be presenters during the event. It came after an announcement that confirmed Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s voice over reprisal as Tails.

The Game Awards will take place 9 December at 8:00 pm ET.
