2022 reassured to be the “big year” for Sonic following unveiling of new Sonic Origins gameplay during South Korean broadcast

Fans got a preview at the upcoming anniversary collection, and a reminder about the franchise’s big year

As the release of Sonic Origins nears, more promotional material begun to appear.

Gameplay of Origins was showcased on Rulicon, an online broadcast hosted by a popular South Korean internet community. It provided new information about the upcoming collection slated for a June release date.

The gameplay highlighted features of the Anniversary Mode, and some of the missions that fans can play to challenge themselves.

During the presentation, SEGA’s publishing unit in South Korea gave some details related to Origins, while assuring that 2022 is “the biggest year in Sonic’s history”.

Among the details that were revealed, the biggest one was that the Drop Dash will be returning to Origins via the Anniversary Mode. It was a feature that the blue blur possessed in 2017’s Sonic Mania. Alongside that was the unveiling of a dedicated button to activate Super Sonic, instead of the usual jump button from the Mega Drive days.

And to the relief of many fans, a Blue Sphere mode was also confirmed, in which fans can marathon through Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s iconic special stage.

A big year for Sonic

Sonic Studio creative officer Takashi Iizuka finished off the presentation by talking about the significance of 2022 for Sonic, and the numbers that Paramount’s movie sequel brought from the box office.

Sonic Origins is a title where you can enjoy all four works that are the origin of Sonic. 2022, the year where Sonic turns 31, is the biggest year in Sonic’s history. The movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is showing a higher box office success than its’ predecessor. And in the second half of this year, the animation Sonic Prime will be streamed on Netflix. It depicts a new world of Sonic that could not be expressed in movies or games, so please look forward to it.

Iizuka also finished off that at the end of 2022, fans will be delivered Sonic Frontiers, the next mainline game of the Sonic series. He added that Frontiers will attempt to break the norm of the linear gameplay structure exhibited in previous Sonic games.

Finally, as the second half of the year nears, I think we will be able to deliver the news on the release of Sonic Frontiers, a completely new action game produced by Sonic Team. It has evolved from a linear style to a new open world style. The team put a lot of effort into challenging new areas, so please look forward to it.
