Paramount confirms third Sonic movie and Knuckles spin-off series

It’s official: a third theatrical Sonic film is on the way, with a Knuckles spin-off series arriving on Paramount Plus next year.

The Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe is expanding with the announcement of a third theatrical film and a spin-off series, Paramount officially confirmed in a press conference late Tuesday.


Following an acknowledgement that the speedy blue hedgehog became a part of Paramount’s family of iconic film franchises, the company confirmed to investors and the public that Sonic will receive a third theatrical film, even though the sequel has yet to be released.

On top of that, Paramount announced a new original series dedicated to the Sonic movie universe. The spin-off series will feature Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by actor Idris Elba. It is expected to be released in 2023 for the streaming service Paramount Plus, and it will feature a mixture of live-action and computer generated animation.

We are excited to announce today that Paramount and SEGA are developing the first ever original Sonic series for Paramount Plus next year. Paramount and SEGA are also developing a third Sonic theatrical film. And all of this content will make Paramount Plus the home for this incredibly popular franchise.

Following the announcement, SEGA CEO Haruki Satomi pushed out a press release and expressed that 2022 will be a significant year for the Sonic brand, with the arrival of the movie sequel, Sonic Prime, Sonic Origins, and Sonic Frontiers.

We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them. 2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come.
