Sonic movie sequel debuts internationally to 25 million dollars in box office numbers

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is off to a strong start in international markets.

Strong box office numbers came out for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in a number of countries this past weekend, and even grabbed the top spot in some regions and dethroned box-office rival Morbius.


The sequel to the hit video game movie debuted with positive word-of-mouth reviews from the public, allowing it to grab number 1 in various regions across the world.

The film saw its’ strongest performance so far in the United Kingdom, in which it debuted to $6.4 million, France with $5.7 million, Australia with $2.8 million, Spain with $2.2 million, and Germany to $2.1 million. The movie also got the number one spot in Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Box office analysts believe that Sonic will enjoy a “long tail” at the cinemas, thanks to school vacations, which will bring more children to watch the movie. The video game film is still expected to debut in valuable markets like the United States, Mexico, Italy, Brazil and Japan.

Tails’ Channel understood that the movie is very likely heading towards a good opening in North America, with the sequel aiming towards a $60 million start, and with a chance of it reaching more than $70 million if it all goes well.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will debut in U.S. movie theaters on 8 April 2022.
