How to play Sonic Rumble: New details on Shadow campaign, gameplay modes, and settings

Sonic Rumble beta testers will explore various gameplay modes, including challenges and power-ups that may influence the final product.

Sonic Rumble developers have shared details about the different gameplay modes, settings, and campaigns ahead of today’s play session.

Why it matters: Eligible play testers are expected to explore and provide feedback on these features for the first time, which could influence the final product.

Here’s a summary of the latest details:

Matches

The event consists of three rounds with different challenges:

  • First Round: Players must cross the finish line quickly and collect rings. The first 16 to reach the goal advance.
  • Second Round: It could be a “Survival”, “Hunt”, or “Team” challenge. The top 8 survivors, players with the most points, or the winning team move on.
  • Third and Final Round: A “Ring Battle” where players aim to collect and steal as many rings as possible from their opponents.

Round 1 – Run:

  • Objective: Reach the goal before other players.
  • End Condition: When a certain number of participants reach the goal or when the time limit is reached.
  • Advancement: Top 16 players proceed to the next round.

Round 2 Options:

  1. Survival:
    • Objective: Survive longer than other players.
    • End Condition: When the designated number of players are eliminated.
    • Advancement: Up to 8 survivors proceed to the next round.
  2. Hunt:
    • Objective: Accumulate points within the time limit.
    • End Condition: When the time limit is reached.
    • Advancement: Top 8 players with the most points proceed to the next round.
  3. Team:
    • Objective: Form 2 teams of 8 members each and compete against the other team.
    • Variants: Cooperative races or point-scoring battles.
    • Advancement: All winning teams proceed to the next round.

Round 3 – Ring Battle:

  • Objective: Collect as many rings as possible by running around the stage.
  • End Condition: When the time limit is reached.
  • Winner: Player with the most rings at the end of the round.

Additional mechanics

For the “Run” minigame in the 1st round, and “Survival” and “Team” minigames in the 2nd round, if the match is undecided because:

  1. not enough players reach the goal in “Run”; or,
  2. not enough players are eliminated in “Survival”; or,
  3. winning team is undecided in “Team”,

the players selected will go from highest to lowest rings. This is an additional mechanic players have to look out for, on top of playing well in the game.

Power-ups available in rounds:

  • Magnet: draws nearby rings towards you.
  • Barrier: blocks one enemy attack on other players.
  • Invincible: temporarily makes you invincible against attacks.
  • Boost: allows faster running and prevents staggering after bumping into other players.
  • Attack: enables attacking other players and stealing their rings.
  • Range Attack: launches an area attack, hitting all players within range and stealing their rings upon a successful hit.

Challenge mode:

This mode allows players to practice their skills in single player for rewards.

This mode is not unlocked by default, so players will need to play some rounds of the main Ring Survival game mode to complete Amy’s Requests on their Season Pass to earn Bronze Medals.

These will be used to unlock challenge stages in the Stage Challenge menu under Season Pass.

  • Challenge Battles do not give the same rewards as normal matches and do not count towards Amy’s Requests.
  • You will only receive rewards upon clearing a Challenge for the first time.
  • Battles that require 4 people can only be attempted in teams of four, however, during the Beta, this feature will be disabled.

Beta-exclusive Fearless event:

Players need to use the Fearless sticker in matches to earn points for the community. There are 6 milestones with increasing rewards to unlock.

Settings

  • Changing username: can only be done once every 7 days.
  • Camera & touch control settings can be adjusted.

As the game is still in testing, all of this is subject to adjustments and change.

A reminder: Save data will not be transferred from the beta test to the final game.

  • According to server moderators, players who take part in developer discussion sessions will receive a special gift upon the final game’s release this holiday.
