A reference drawing of Surge the Tenrec in a new outfit was unveiled by IDW Publishing in the company’s May 2024 catalogue early Thursday.
Many fans on social media reacted positively to the design, with various elements inspired by the Sonic Riders video game.
Some also anticipate new looks for Kit the Fennec and the Diamond Cutters to be unveiled soon, as the return of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series nears.
“Well ain’t that thumbthin’,” artist Aaron Hammerstrom said in a reply to Tails’ Channel affiliate IDWSonicNews on the microblogging site formerly known as Twitter.
“These designs were all collaborations between the people working on the arc, but I did this specific reference drawing! Glad people like it though,” he said.
Hammerstrom was confirmed to work with Min Ho Kim to illustrate the upcoming story arc for the Sonic comics. The arc was reportedly expected to revolve around Extreme Gear racing, and aimed to create designs that would fit into a hypothetical Sonic Riders game.
The new story will kick off on the 69th issue at or around May 2024.
